Installation

Gifts for an officer taking the chair

The plaque with his office and year is the presentation piece. The cufflinks and the tie are for the night itself.

Installation is the one night a year a Lodge dresses up. The new Worshipful Master takes the chair, the officer line is invested, and the festive board afterward is the longest of the year. The gift that marks it is the slate plaque: his name, the Lodge, the office and the year, in gold on natural stone. It stands on the desk through his year and for decades after.

For the night itself, the engraved cufflinks and the square and compasses necktie are for wearing under the tux. A Lodge that gives something to every officer in the line can give one engraved glass to each, with the office on the third line, ordered together in one message so the names are set up at the same time. The Lodge orders guide walks through it.

The pieces

For installation night

The plaque for the Master, pieces for the line, and what he wears on the night.

The Master, the line, and the outgoing Master

For the incoming Worshipful Master. The personalized slate plaque, engraved with his office and year, presented at the festive board. Some Lodges add the Worshipful Master tee as the light gift from the line at his first stated meeting.

For the officer line. A glass each, whiskey or wine, engraved with name, Lodge and office. Order them together and ask for the same layout on every glass. The pillars and arch mug is the alternative for a line that prefers coffee to whiskey.

For the outgoing Master. He becomes a Past Master that night, and his gift is on the Past Master page. If both are presented on the same night, the incoming Master’s plaque comes first and the Past Master’s second, at the toast.

Timing

Installation dates are fixed months ahead, so order early. Personalized pieces are made to order; allow the processing time on each listing plus shipping, and add two weeks for an officer line of six or more. Most pieces are made and shipped in the United States. If the date is close, the cufflinks, tie and ready-made pieces ship fastest, and the plaque can follow for presentation at the next stated meeting.

Questions

Before you order

Who presents the installation gift?

By custom, the Installing Master or the immediate Past Master, at the festive board after the ceremony. If the gift is from the officer line, the Senior Warden presents it on the line’s behalf.

How should the office be written on the plaque?

Use the title the Lodge uses in its own minutes: “Worshipful Master,” “Senior Warden,” “Secretary.” Add the year of the term. Abbreviations are fine as long as every plaque in a set uses the same style.

Can the whole officer line be ordered at once?

Yes. Message the shop on Etsy with each Brother’s name, office and the Lodge details before you order, and the engraving for every piece is set up together. The Lodge orders guide has a template.

Is Meet Upon The Level connected to a Grand Lodge?

No. Meet Upon The Level is an independent shop run by a Freemason for Brethren and their families. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any Grand Lodge, and every order is placed and paid for through Etsy.
